Femtosecond Laser Approval LenSx Lasers has announced that its LenSx femtosecond laser for laser phacofragmentation during cataract surgery has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA. As published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, LenSx laser phacofragmentation resulted in a 43 percent reduction in average phaco power and a 51 percent reduction in effective phaco time. Applanation Tonometer Keeler Instruments has launched its Goldmann-Style Applanation Tonometer, the Keeler Applanation Tonometer. The FDA-approved contact tonometer is intended to aid in glaucoma diagnosis, with IOP measurements taken at the slit lamp as part of a routine examination. It uses the Goldmann method of measuring IOP, calculating the force required to flatten a constant area of the cornea using a special prism mounted on the tonometer head and placed against the cornea. The tonometer is compatible with most slit lamps and comes in a guide-plate mounted “T” type or optical body-post mounted “R” type. Keeler Instruments
Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Bausch + Lomb has announced the launch of its PreserVision Eye Vitamin and Mineral Supplement AREDS 2 formula. This builds on the original AREDS formula, replacing beta-carotene with lutein (10 mg) and zeaxanthin (2 mg) and adding omega-3 fatty acids (1,000 mg) per daily dosage. The AREDS2 study, which is currently ongoing and is expected to be completed in 2013, is sponsored by the National Eye Institute/National Institute of Health. Bausch + Lomb
360-Degree Lens Volk Optical has developed a new gonio lens, the G-6 Gonio Lens. The lens’ six mirrors are equally angled at 63 degrees, providing a true 360-degree view during glaucoma screening without any lens adjustment required and eliminating gaps for visualization of the entire anterior segment at 1x magnification. During examination, two of the mirrors are aligned in the superior and inferior regions, while the remaining four mirrors provide a continuous view through the nasal and temporal regions. Practitioners can quickly scan across mirrors, without the confusion of tracking where one view ends and the next begins that can come from rotating the lens. The G-6’s taller, tapered profile is easy to hold within the orbit and is designed to lessen the chance that a patient can squeeze it off the eye. The no flange/no fluid design of this lens facilitates use without viscous interface solutions. For handling flexibility, the G-6 comes with a ring or a two-in-one handle that can be adjusted to create a straight or 45-degree angled grip. Volk Optical
Corneal Implant Approval Addition Technology has announced that it has received FDA approval for an expanded range of additional sizes of its Intacs corneal implants for keratoconus. The company is also the maker of AlphaSphere orbital implants and the AlphaCor artificial cornea. Addition Technology
Handheld Magnifier Eschenbach has introduced the 4x Mobilux Handheld Magnifier. The Mobilux’s 16 D hybrid lens (which combines an upper refractive lens with a lower multi-order diffractive lens) and large size (75 mm x 50 mm) are designed to provide patients with a 30 percent greater field of view than a comparably powered round lens. The Mobilux also features an LED that lasts 10,000 hours and a removable plastic lens cover that protects the lens and extends the product’s life. Eschenbach
