Constellation Corrective Action Plan

Alcon has announced that it has received clearance from the FDA to complete its voluntary medical device corrective action plan on all Constellation Vision Systems in the United States. Alcon submitted a 510(k) for the voluntary corrective action plan to the FDA on May 6, 2010. The plan included specific hardware and software modifications to address identified reported events.

Alcon states that it will work as quickly as possible to implement the modifications to existing customer systems. These modifications will also be included with all new system installations.

The Constellation Vision System—commercially launched in October 2008—is used by ophthalmic surgeons to perform surgery in the anterior and posterior chamber of the eye.

Gonioscopy Lens

Volk Optical has introduced its Mini 4 Mirror Gonio Lens.

Designed for small anatomies and narrow palpebral fissures, the Mini 4 Mirror offers a full view (with slight lens rotation) of the chamber angle at 1x magnification. The small body and ring are intended to ease manipulation of the lens, especially within a small orbit.

Volk states that its proprietary contact design has the stability of a flanged contact without the use of viscous interface solutions required by typical flanged lenses. A broadband coating reduces glare and reflections, and maximizes laser throughput.

Instrument Line

Oasis Medical announces the introduction of its Premier Edge Safety Line. It includes a 15-degree, 20-gauge straight microvitreoretinal knife, a 2-mm angled crescent blade and single-bevel keratomes in sizes ranging from 2.2 to 3.2 mm.

This line is designed with a safety guard that slides over the blade for protection while the knife is not in use and retracts fully onto the handle while it is in use. The guard can be extended, retracted and locked in place with one hand. The clear material of the guard is designed to offer an unrestricted view of the surgical field.

Vitreous Hemorrhage Model

Gulden Ophthalmics has released a new eye model designed to aid patients in understanding vitreous hemorrhaging and how head position while sleeping can affect vision. The Siepser Vitreous Hemorrhage Demonstrator contains simulated, suspended blood particles that float in the vitreous humor. When moved or shaken—simulating normal head movement—the particles remain suspended. At rest, the particles will settle at the lowest point in the eye.

Eye Orbit Sizer Kits

Gulden Ophthalmics has introduced Eye Orbit Sizer Kits that help ophthalmologists and staff determine the proper size for orbital implants or other ocular prostheses.

When the globe must be eviscerated or enucleated, this kit is designed to save time and provide more accurate measurements and fitting of orbital implants. Each package contains four sterile, single-use, disposable sizers in 14-, 16-, 18- and 20-mm sizes. The sizers are constructed of PMMA, and sizes are etched into the handles.
