Abbott Medical Optics has introduced its Microimplantation Cataract Suite for improving cataract procedure outcomes and safety.
The suite enables the surgeon to perform an entire microsurgical procedure and consists of five separate components:
- the Unfolder Platinum 1 Series Implantation System,
- Tecnis one-piece IOLs,
- Healon viscoelastics,
- the Whitestar Signature Phacoemulsifcation System and
- surgical accessories designed specifically for microimplantation procedures.

Laser System Gains Approval
LensAR has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for use of the LensAR Laser System for anterior capsulotomy and lens fragmentation during cataract surgery.
Its proprietary 3D-CSI (confocal structured illumination) imaging and biometry system is designed to image and analyze the anatomy across all grades of cataract and to improve proficiency.
Unlike traditional imaging systems, 3D-CSI is intended to provide clean, low-noise images that are both high contrast and high resolution, from the anterior surface of the cornea to the posterior capsule. The precision of 3D-CSI is intended to create an exact capsulotomy incision size and placement based on IOL selection, and to fragment high-grade cataracts for easier removal.
Bausch + Lomb Storz has introduced the E7002 Osher Sterile Field Magnifier, an autoclavable, compact magnification tool.
The instrument features a 50-mm lens and is designed for loading IOLs into the injector and for aligning the irrigation sleeve on the phaco or I/A tip before use. The lens provides magnification for inspecting surgical instrument tips and ensuring that the phaco tip is properly placed in the irrigation sleeve. It also can be used by OR staff to differentiate microsurgical instrument tips.
The magnifier can be cleaned and sterilized by conventional means. The lens folds down into the base of the instrument to allow it to fit into most instrument trays for ease of processing.

Diopsys has launched its NOVA-DN Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) Vision Testing System for detecting optic nerve disease, including glaucoma and other neuro-visual disorders.
The NOVA-DN is designed to objectively assess optic nerve disease earlier than traditional vision tests through the use of VEP technology and software that evaluates the entire visual system, from the eye to the visual cortex.
The NOVA-DN records the electrical response of a patient’s vision system and provides easy-to-read reports that give ophthalmologists a simple way to evaluate optic nerve function. Moreover, test results can be compared over time to track progression.
Condensing Lens Assembly
Volk Optical has built on its manually operated Merlin surgical viewing system with a new condensing lens assembly (CLA). The CLA option provides vitreoretinal surgeons the same detailed retinal views through the microscope with the convenience of fully automated operation.
The Merlin is designed to provide precise control of non-contact lens position and focus for clear, crisp views during vitreoretinal surgery. With the CLA, lens positioning is directed via a foot pedal or the device’s lens positioning unit (LPU). When the LPU is swung into the surgical field, bringing the Volk lens into position, the CLA moves the condensing lens into the optical pathway to provide crisp retinal views.
The LPU is fully rotational around the optical axis for optimal lens position relative to the patient. The LPU and lens swing out of the surgical field when working on the cornea, maximizing space for surgical manipulation.
Akorn has entered into an agreement to acquire Advanced Vision Research, an over-the-counter ophthalmic company that develops and markets eye care products under the TheraTears and MacuTrition brand names.
Akorn also announced plans to launch a new consumer health division to enter the OTC eye care market, pending the acquisition of Advanced Vision Research.
