Laser System Topcon has announced that it has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Pascal Streamline 577 laser. This solid-state, true-yellow, 577-nm-wavelength system features pattern-scanning capabilities intended for treating anterior and posterior ophthalmic disorders, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, wet age-related macular degeneration and retinal vascular occlusive disease. The Pascal Streamline 577 has an option for printing summaries of each procedure and an optional onboard Video Teaching System with an integrated video camera and monitor. Eye Sphere Introducer Gulden Ophthalmics has released a new Eye Sphere Introducer that helps the surgeon hold and then place eye spheres in enucleated or eviscerated eye orbits. The Eye Sphere Introducer is ergonomically designed for efficient, accurate placement; it utilizes sphere-holding prongs and a spring-loaded plunger. Also known as a Carter sphere introducer, it is constructed of polished stainless steel and can be sanitized and sterilized between uses by various sterilization methods. Training Tools for Cataract Surgery FCI Ophthalmics has introduced two training tools for cataract surgery. The Kitaro DryLab is designed to facilitate the teaching and practice of basic techniques in phacoemulsification at the desk. Surgeons can repeatedly practice basic instrument manipulation and nuclear segmentation techniques. It is also possible to practice self-sealing wound construction, as well as suturing. The Kitaro WetLab is designed to simulate phacoemulsification using a phaco machine under a microscope in an operating room or wet lab. Surgeons can practice almost all steps in phacoemulsification, such as continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis, all nuclear segmentation techniques and even IOL insertion.
