Whether you are a resident or you have already joined a practice, you were (or will be) surprised and overwhelmed to learn of the multitude of business decisions you must confront. In addition, you are far more likely to be confident in your clinical aptitude than in your command of the business aspects of practice. This includes, but is not limited to, coding and documenting appropriately, understanding complex legal issues such as co-management, and negotiating a fair employment agreement. To further complicate matters, regulations continue to change.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology is committed to providing you with the information you need to be successful in practice, both the clinical and business aspects. A free membership in the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives (AAOE) - the practice management arm of the Academy - is provided to you throughout your residency, fellowship and first year in practice. In subsequent years, the $175 membership in AAOE will more than pay for itself.

Among the benefits you will receive:

  • The Coding Bulletin, an electronic monthly newsletter to provide you with current, reliable tips about ophthalmic coding.
  • Two complimentary coding questions a year. Just send your questions to
  • CODEquest College, all-day coding seminars in more than 20 cities. It includes state specific information, and there is a discount available for residents. View the schedule.
