Academy members: login to read or make comments on this article.
Who says the Joint Meeting has to be just about scientific presentations and educational sessions? This is Chicago after all! So take advantage of the many opportunities to mix a bit of business with pleasure and connect with other young ophthalmologists.

Visit the YO Lounge
Stop by the YO Lounge any time during the meeting to connect with other YOs. Sponsored by Allergan, the YO Lounge is the perfect place to meet fellow young ophthalmologists, gather practical advice about Academy programs, get tips on how to best navigate the Joint Meeting, access the Internet or just kick back and relax.

And don’t miss the happy hour on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., sponsored by OPHTHPAC and the Surgical Scope Fund. Stop by for complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres and learn how your involvement in state and federal advocacy efforts can protect quality patient eye care and impact your practice, as well as the future of ophthalmology.

Then check back on Monday, Oct. 18, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for yet another happy hour, co-sponsored by the Academy’s YO Committee and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Members in Training Committee. Mingle with clinician-scientists and munch while discovering the myriad of exciting careers that allow you to incorporate research.

Mix It Up and Dress It Up
After long days of courses and instructions, you’ll need a night to relax with your peers. So be sure to clear your calendar on Sunday, Oct. 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the new global YO reception, held at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. The event is FREE, but the experience will be priceless.

And if the idea of swapping that suit for something a bit fancier stirs your, well, fancy, then make the Orbital Gala a top destination during the meeting. This black-tie optional event is a great way to network in style while also supporting the many public service programs sponsored by the Academy’s Foundation and EyeCare America.

This year’s event will be held at the historic Palmer House Hilton on Sunday, Oct. 17. With a special 50 percent discount for young ophthalmologists, there’s no excuse to pass up the chance to visit this part of Annual Meeting history as you connect with fellow YOs, mingle with Academy leadership and meet future peers. Best of all, your admission to the Orbital Gala supports the mission of the Academy and its Foundation.

Virtual Cocktail Lounge
With all this socializing, there’s something nearly every night of the meeting. But what about Saturday night or Tuesday lunch? Or perhaps you only have an hour to spend on the Exhibit Floor and need tips on the best booths to visit. Or maybe you are looking for where other YOs are taking a coffee break or happy hour.

Whatever your question, if you’re on Twitter, you can find other meeting attendees and follow what people are saying by using or searching for hashtag #aaochi10. Look for live coverage of the meeting from the Academy account (@aao_ophth), as well as a meeting blog from EyeNet.

In Summary
Whether you choose from the many socializing opportunities just for YOs, dress it up a bit and attend the Orbital Gala or simply visit the virtual cocktail lounge from the comfort of your hotel room, you can definitely find plenty of ways to connect with your peers at this year’s meeting in Chicago.
