People attend the Academy’s Annual Meeting for many reasons, but one of them is certainly the other attendees — experts from whom you want to learn, colleagues in your subspecialty, friends you haven’t seen since residency. To help you make the right connections at this year’s meeting in Orlando, the Academy has planned several events to help YOs get and stay in touch.
The YO Lounge
Now in its fourth year running, the YO Lounge is an ideal place to meet other YOs, access the Internet and even get practical advice about Academy programs. Just remember to wear your YO ribbon
or you won’t be admitted. The YO Lounge
is open during most hours the meeting is in session. You’ll want to stop by throughout the meeting, as the lounge is hosting a networking event and two happy hours.
On Monday, Oct. 24, stop by between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for a special networking event for YOs interested in international endeavors: Meet with an International Expert. Scheduled immediately after the international forum, “Latest Trends and Next Generation Developments in International Eye Care
,” the event provides a chance to chat with leaders like Academy President Richard Abbott, MD, and Past President Michael Brennan, MD, along with international experts John Cropsey, MD
; Linda Lawrence, MD; Matt Oliva, MD; David Paton, MD; and Larry Schwab, MD.
And don’t miss the lounge’s two happy hours. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the OPHTHPAC and Surgical Scope Fund committees are sponsoring a happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Stop by for complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres, and learn the ins and outs of state and federal advocacy efforts.
Then come back on Monday, Oct. 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the popular YO ARVO! Exploring Careers in Research happy hour begun last year. Sip and snack as you hear great advice on a career track in the world of academics.

For a complete listing of all alumni and related group events, visit the events page on the Academy website
. While onsite, you can also pick up a listing at the Bags & Programs counters, Meeting Information booths or Academy Resource Center.
Online, you can join the meeting conversation two ways: If you’re on Twitter, follow the conversation by using hashtag #aao11
. There will also be discussions, video highlights and more on the Academy Online Community
. Both are a great source for last-minute updates, Academy news and impromptu gatherings — but also a good way to follow the meeting even if you aren’t able to make it to Orlando this year.
