August 2012

YO Info™ is the American Academy of Ophthalmology's newsletter for young ophthalmologists (YOs) — those in training as well as in their first few years in practice.

This newsletter provides YOs with information about practice management, coding and insurance questions, balancing work and family, and many other issues relevant to YOs. You'll also learn more about resources and services that are already available to you from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives (AAOE).

Coding
Surgical Coding 101, Part 2: What's Not Included in the Global Surgical Package?
Building on last month’s introduction to surgical coding fundamentals, which covered what’s included in the global surgical package, we now turn to coding what's not included. If medically necessary and appropriately documented, the following services — which are not included in the global surgical package — may be billed separately.

Practice Management
A Primer on Accountable Care Organizations
Over the past three decades, we have seen enormous advances in medical care as doctors have developed better ways to diagnose and treat patients. During the same time, there have been many changes in how that care is paid for and where it is delivered. Those of us who have lived through various iterations can be forgiven for our skepticism about any new “system” purported to revolutionize the delivery of health care. However, the newest acronym — ACO — stands for a concept that could represent a sea change in the very complex system of medical care that we have in our country.

Joint Meeting
YO Symposia Preview: Can't-Miss Sessions Cover Refractive Surgery to Volunteering
During this November’s Joint Meeting in Chicago with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), the Academy convenes the most exciting annual gathering of eye surgeons anywhere in the world. This year the program includes more than 40 symposia developed by more than 30 subspecialty societies and groups like the YO Committee. Although symposia are free, the one- to two-hour events offer CME. They’re also meant to both educate and intrigue audiences, incorporating cases, visuals and discussion into their sessions.

Feature
How Physicians Benefit From Being 'Social'
The adoption of social media tools — such as Facebook and Twitter — has profoundly altered the communications landscape in all industries, including health care. Television and radio commercials regularly direct consumers to their Facebook page rather than their website. Moreover, companies post contests that encourage consumers to associate themselves with corporate Twitter accounts and Facebook pages.
