Still Time to Avoid the Penalty — Get Cracking on PQRS and E-Prescribing
In 2007, CMS established the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), a pay-for-reporting program that includes claims- and registry-based reporting of data on individual quality measures or on a cataract group measure. PQRS was the first of three incentive programs that also include e-prescribing and meaningful use. While the early phases of these programs included only positive payment adjustments for participation (i.e., bonuses), CMS will soon begin phasing in negative adjustments — penalties — for those who don’t participate or don’t report successfully. Though these cuts won’t take effect until 2015, they’re based on what you do this year.
The Five Steps of Supervision, Part 1
“Putting out brush fires – that’s all I seem to do!” lamented the office manager. “From the time I get here in the morning until I leave the office late at night, I am constantly dealing with staff problems. I can’t seem to get anything else done!” I listened carefully, then asked her a couple of questions. Her answers were excellent qualities that managers should have, but they didn’t describe a system for managing employees. A system will help you to get the most productivity from your employees by helping them develop their skills and talents. This can be accomplished by implementing the five steps of supervision.
Saving a Place at the Table
"If you’re not at the table, you’re probably on the menu,” said Rep. Larry Bucshon, MD, R-Ind. A former cardiothoracic surgeon now serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Bucshon spoke to a roomful of young ophthalmologists during a luncheon at the Academy’s Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. His words might seem harsh, but they resonated with me during my eye-opening experience on Capitol Hill. Rep. Bucshon is correct — ophthalmologists (and all physicians) have a responsibility to protect our profession and our patients by becoming engaged in politics. If we do not, then we will most certainly be “on the menu,” so to speak.

Walking into the U.S. Capitol building evokes a unique sense of history and civic responsibility. And when the only other time you’ve made that walk was on a middle-school field trip, it also evokes a sense of awe and anxiety. A bill submitted to the state legislature would allow optometrists to perform eye surgery (e.g. lasers, scalpel) in Louisiana. There are three easy ways you can help protect quality patient eye care in Louisiana.
