How to Stop Leak During Cortex Removal

    Cataract/Anterior Segment, Complications

In this 1-Minute Video, Dr. Hassan Khaled demonstrates how to stop leakage during cortex removal in cataract surgery. When the width of the side port is wider than the diameter of the irrigation probe, a severe leak around the irrigation probe can compromise the stability of the anterior chamber during cortex removal. This can lead to complications such as posterior capsular tear or zonular dialysis resulting in vitreous loss. Dr. Khaled shows that twisting the side port with the irrigation probe during cortex removal or OVD wash can stop leaks and improve anterior chamber stability. Twisting can also help the surgeon fix the eye during cortex removal.
