In this 1-Minute Video, Dr. Sunir Garg encourages ocular surgeons to prioritize ergonomics in the operating room (OR). He notices many surgeons sit hunched over, especially at the microscope, in postures that are not ideal for back and neck comfort. He recommends building an ergonomic OR environment before bringing in the patient. Surgeons should first sit comfortably on their stool with feet on the foot pedals, positioning the microscope in a comfortable manner that allows a neutral seat. After positioning the patient, surgeons should adjust the bed height as necessary. Dr. Garg explains that slowing down to build an ergonomic environment is vital for career longevity.
