This 1-Minute Video demonstrates the removal of gas from a phakic patient after a failed pneumatic retinopexy. This can be difficult to accomplish with a cutter or a backflush through the trocar, so Dr. Mandelcorn suggests inserting the trocar blade into the valve and rotating the globe so that the bubble is positioned just under the trocar. Next, insert the trocar blade and remove it slowly until the gas begins to percolate through the valve. Leave the blade in position until all of the gas has bubbled out of the open valve.
