Pneumatic Retinopexy: Patient Selection

In this whiteboard video, Drs. Rajeev Muni, Carolina Francisconi and team discuss the importance of appropriate patient selection to improve success with pneumatic retinopexy. A careful examination of the peripheral retina is required in order to assess the number, size and location of the retinal breaks within the detached and attached retinal areas.

Based on the PIVOT trial, the ideal candidates for pneumatic retinopexy are those with a single break or multiple breaks within 1 clock hour in the detached retina in the superior 8 clock hours. There can be any number, location and size of retinal breaks or lattice degeneration in the attached retina. Exclusion criteria include significant media opacity, inability to maintain positioning, significant proliferative vitreoretinopathy and inferior breaks in the detached retina from 4 to 8 o’clock.
