    2022 Guest of Honor Awardee: Paul G. Steinkuller, MD

    The American Academy of Ophthalmology and Academy President Robert E. Wiggins, MD, MHA are pleased to recognize Paul G. Steinkuller, MD as a guest of honor at AAO 2022.

    Dr. Steinkuller is a retired assistant professor of ophthalmology and former chair of pediatric ophthalmology at Texas Children’s Hospital at the Baylor College of Medicine. He also worked in extensively in Africa, including Kenya, Malawi, and Madagascar where he cared for the underserved and underprivileged and offered training to numerous ophthalmologists.

    Dr. Steinkuller was awarded the Academy’s Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award in 2007. Dr. Wiggins met Dr. Steinkuller while working in the department of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Texas Children’s Hospital and Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine in 1988.

    When he asked Dr. Steinkuller for career advice, he was told that “you can be happy in any of the numerous practice options open to ophthalmologists; your greatest satisfaction, wherever you land, will come from your patients.” An inspiration to everyone he has worked with, Dr. Steinkuller exemplifies the true meaning of being a physician.
