  • Urge Lawmakers to Support Effort to Finalize Prior Authorization Regulations

Ophthalmology champions in Congress are urging their peers in the U.S. House and Senate to co-sign letters calling for the Biden administration to finalize action that would streamline the prior authorization process in the Medicare Advantage program.

The letters from the House (PDF) and Senate (PDF), which ask the administration to finalize proposed rules on Medicare Advantage, also encourage the administration to expand the rules to incorporate more provisions from the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act, including:

    • A mechanism for real-time prior authorization decisions for routinely approved services
    • A 24-hour deadline for Medicare Advantage plans to respond to prior authorization requests for urgently needed care
    • A requirement for detailed transparency metrics
