The Argument for Evisceration
By Jan W. Kronish, MD
Annual Meeting 2013
Oculoplastics/Orbit
In this 2013 Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Day presentation, Dr. Jan W. Kronish discusses the risks, benefits, and controversies of evisceration. He says that some fears about evisceration, such as sympathetic ophthalmia and missing undetected malignancy, are exaggerated, and that with adequate preop evaluation, these conditions are rare; however, evisceration is not for everyone, and ultimately the choice of enucleation or evisceration rests with the patient and the physician.
