A Clinically Oriented Guide to AI for Ophthalmologists

    AAO2021 Video Program
    Comprehensive Ophthalmology

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding into clinical medicine and changing the way clinicians approach diseases. With a foundation in innovative technology and diagnostic imaging, the field of ophthalmology is well suited for this advancement. Validated AI systems, particularly in the subset of AI termed “machine learning,” have recently been introduced to the field to help ophthalmologists optimize care for diseases such as diabetic retinopathy. With an exponential growth of AI in the field, it is worthwhile for clinicians to receive an overview of the technology and its clinical implications. This video aims to give clinicians a concise overview of AI's current application in clinical ophthalmology and the foundational theory behind the technology, such as convolutional neural networks in image analysis. We also suggest ways ophthalmologists can receive hands-on, accessible training in AI with fundus photos and apply it in routine clinical practice.
