    Cutting Through the Haze

    AAO 2019 Video Program
    Cataract/Anterior Segment

In this video various ways to tackle corneal opacity (local and diffuse as well as partial vs. total) combined with cataract will be demonstrated. Preoperative investigations; surgical planning, including incision site, capsulorrhexis, emulsification technique and type of IOL; and intraoperative as well as postoperative problems encountered will be highlighted in such cases. Use of aids such as trypan blue dye, endoilluminators and nylon hooks will be demonstrated in complex cases like healed keratitis, chemical injuries, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid and Steven-Johnson syndrome. Combined procedures such as anterior lamellar keratoplasty (automated lamellar therapeutic and deep lamellar) and posterior lamellar keratoplasty (Descemet-stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty triple), along with phacoemulsification, will be elucidated on the intraoperative OCT microscope in a 3-dimensional view to demonstrate how surgeons can cut through the haze.
