Debate: Wavefront-Guided Ablation in Myopic Eyes Offers A Measurable Advantage

    By Steven Schallhorn, MD
    Subspecialty Day 2011: Refractive Surgery
    Refractive Mgmt/Intervention

In this point-counterpoint presentation, Dr. Steven Schallhorn argues that wavefront-guided ablation does have measurable benefits in myopes with higher-order aberrations (HOAs) less than 0.3 µm. Dr. Schallhorn cites population studies showing 61% of eyes have pre-existing HOAs greater than 0.3 µm. Compared to wavefront-optimized ablation, Dr. Schallhorn believes wavefront-guided ablation induces fewer HOAs and produces better contrast sensitivity and quality of vision.
