Dense Brunescent Cataract and a History of Head Trauma

    Cataract Spotlight/AAO 2022
Cataract/Anterior Segment, Complications, IOLs and Implantation, Mature Cataract, Vitrectomy

In this presentation, Dr. Naveen Rao reviews the case of a 70-year-old man with a history of significant head trauma. The patient had a 4+ dense brunescent cataract OS and lived 4 hours from the clinic. An expert panel and the audience examine possible surgical approaches, such as prechopping with a femtosecond laser or miLOOP followed by phacoemulsification. Dr. Rao eventually discovers a large posterior capsular tear, and there is no residual capsular support, leading to a second audience question of what intraocular lens to use.
