Herpes Simplex Virus: Treatment of Acute, Chronic Disease

    AAO 2015
    Cornea/External Disease

In this presentation from AAO 2015, Dr. Natalie A. Afshari discusses the common disease entities and treatment options for herpes simplex virus (HSV) epithelial and stromal keratitis. Dr. Afshari recommends oral antivirals and gentle debridement of dentrites and ulcers for epithelial keratitis and a combination of antivirals and topical corticosteroids for stromal. A long-term regimen of oral antiviral medication at the prophylactic maintenance dose is helpful in patients with recurrences of ocular HSV.
