Part 1 of a 5-part symposium titled "International Opportunities for Young Ophthalmologists." Today's residents and young ophthalmologists (YOs) must become tomorrow's leaders in the global fight against eye disease. This video series addresses the challenges of treating eye disease in underserved parts of the world and identifies the organizations working toward this goal and the opportunities available for resident and YO involvement. It also examines the unique challenges of incorporating volunteer service into one's career by sharing the experiences of those who have found ways to balance work abroad with family, clinical practice, and financial concerns at home. At the conclusion of the video series, the viewer will have an understanding of the global burden of eye disease, the organizations and strategies employed to address this burden, the role residents and YOs play in this work, and the challenges of balancing domestic life with international service.
