Medical Management of Graves Orbitopathy

Most patients with moderate or severe Graves orbitopathy (GO) require treatment. Key to a good outcome is selection of the right intervention at the most appropriate time. Medical treatments are effective only during the active phase of the disease, which sometimes is difficult to define. The clinical activity score (CAS) is currently one of the best ways of identifying the active phase, though it is far from perfect. Among serological markers, TSH receptor antibodies (TRAb) are most promising; however, the utility of TRAb measurement in the management of individual patients is unclear. Topics in this presentation from the 2012 Annual Meeting include damage limitation, antioxidants, and immunosuppressive therapies.
