Should OCT Be Ordered Routinely in Patients with MS?
AAO 2016
Cataract/Anterior Segment, Diagnostic & Imaging
In this presentation from AAO 2016, Fiona E. Costello, MD, presents the argument for ordering OCT in MS patients:
- There is a need for better biomarkers and the current procedure, MRI, is poor.
- In a meta-analysis of time domain OCT studies, the average RNFL measurements were 21 microns of zonular loss in optic neuritis eyes.
- Higher INL thickness has been shown to correlate with MS activity and might be a predictor of disease progression and OCT can identify patients with risk of visual impairment.
- OCT can improve our ability to diagnose, monitor, and potentially treat MS patients.
