The common cause of central retinal artery occlusion is an embolus lodging in the central retinal artery. The actual position of the embolus can be immediately posterior to the lamina cribrosa or more posterior. This video shows various emboli being dislodged by mechanical movement of the vessels with a probe. In each case, circulation improves during the operation.
