We Can Predict Ectasia and Prevent It
By J. Bradley Randleman, MD
Subspecialty Day 2011: Refractive Surgery
Refractive Mgmt/Intervention
Because there is no way to directly measure biomechanical integrity of the cornea, factors for predicting ectasia are considered imprecise measurements of risk. Despite this, incidence for ectasia has dropped precipitously since first being described in 1998 in association with LASIK surgery. Dr. Bradley Randleman explains how the Ectasia Risk Score System, future screening techniques, newer predictive risk factors such as age, and improved interpretation of topographic results will push the rates even lower.
