Staphylococcal bacteria on the anterior eyelid margin can cause blepharitis. This condition is not purely infectious, however; antimicrobial therapy is rarely curative because of a significant inflammatory component that may predispose to bacterial overgrowth and perpetuate a local immune deviation.
