Syphilis is a multisystem, chronic bacterial disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Syphilis has been associated with numerous ophthalmic and neurologic manifestations. This condition can be resolved with appropriate antimicrobial therapy, but delay in the diagnosis can lead to significant ocular and neurological morbidity. See BCSC Section 9, Uveitis and Ocular Inflammation, for an extensive review of syphilis.
