Idarucizumab has been approved for reversal of the direct oral anticoagulant thrombin inhibitor dabigatran during emergency surgery.
Perioperative prophylaxis with β-blockers in noncardiac surgery decreases the risk of acute myocardial infarction but may increase 30-day mortality rates and stroke risk.
Malignant hyperthermia is a potentially lethal complication of anesthesia. Increased awareness about this complication, as well as rapid intraoperative recognition and treatment with dantrolene, has decreased patient mortality to less than 5%.
