The Educational Trust Fund was established to honor Dr. Spivey and his lifelong commitment to advancing the education of ophthalmologists worldwide.
Dr. Spivey's colleagues from around the world contribute to the trust fund because it shares the same goal with his distinguished career -- supporting the development of new and innovative forms of continuing education.
His accomplishments in this area began while he was still in residency training, when he participated in the Academy's Annual Meeting program, and then through active committee and organizational service to the Academy. He served as the first Chair of the Basic and Clinical Science Course, and eventually as the first Chief Executive Officer of the Academy, a position he held for 15 years, during which he led the organization through an era of unprecedented change and growth.
Dr. Spivey has a master's degree in ophthalmic science and in medical education. His faculty positions have included Dean of the School of Medical Sciences at the University of the Pacific, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Pacific Presbyterian (California Pacific) Medical Center-San Francisco and clinical professor at Northwestern, Cornell and Columbia universities. His career has included positions as Chief Executive Officer for Pacific Presbyterian (California Pacific) Medical Center, the Northwestern Healthcare Network-Chicago, and Columbia-Cornell Care-New York. He currently serves as the Secretary General of the International Council of Ophthalmology and as Deputy Executive President of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. He is past President of the American Board of Medical Specialties, the Council of Medical Special Societies, the American Ophthalmological Society, the Society of Medical Administrators, and led the formation of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education and Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education.
