Cataract/Anterior Segment, New Technology & Instruments

In this surgical video, Dr. Nandini Venkateswaran showcases the use of the Akahoshi prechopper for lens fragmentation during cataract surgery in patients with mild to moderate density cataracts as well as in cases using the femtosecond laser. The Akahoshi prechopper is a safe and efficient tool to segment the lens nucleus into 4 quadrants without using any phacoemulsification energy. It is inserted into the eye to fragment the nucleus and can also be used to rotate the lens nucleus with minimal zonular stress. Once the lens nucleus is fragmented, the phacoemulsification probe can be used to emulsify the nucleus with reduced energy and time in the eye.
