In this video, Dr. Misha Faustina presents a systematic approach to effectively diagnose any case of ptosis. But first, she explains, it is important to eliminate life-threatening conditions such as myasthenia gravis and Horner syndrome. Next, Dr. Faustina offers advice on how to “read” a ptosis photo. Begin by considering the patient’s age, followed by assessing the symmetry of the ptosis, vision, pupil symmetry, eye alignment, eyelid crease orientation and brow involvement. Dr. Faustina uses several examples to demonstrate how this technique can be applied to diagnose conditions such as myotonic dystrophy and third nerve palsy. This approach will help provide a framework to accurately diagnose any ptosis case.
