Cataract Surgery in a Patient with Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid

Drs. Guillermo Amescua and Pablo Larco discuss the case of a patient with stage 4 chronic cicatricial conjunctivitis. Because the patient also had esophageal strictures due to ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, a consultation with a rheumatologist was needed and the patient was started on rituximab therapy. While the patient improved after 4 months of treatment, she ultimately required cataract surgery because she was unable to see well enough to walk. The dense nuclear cataract was removed with horizontal chopping to avoid corneal damage.
