Dr. David Chang demonstrates the Zepto system (Mynosys Inc., Fremont, CA), an inexpensive and disposable capsulotomy device that uses nanopulse technology to make a perfectly round and precise capsulotomy. A small console powers the disposable hand piece and capsulotomy tip. The cutting element is a nitinol ring that is surrounded by a thin, transparent shell that is inserted through a clear corneal incision. The device applies gentle suction to the anterior capsule, and brief electrical pulses create an instantaneous mechanical splitting of the anterior capsule with no cautery or burning of tissue. Dr. Chang says this device provides surgeons a precise method of making an anterior capsulotomy at a fraction of the cost of a femtosecond laser. Watch Dr. Chang discuss the latest update on Zepto in this interview from AAO 2016.
