Dr. Pavel Stodulka overviews the procedure and benefits of the new CAPSULaser system for cataract surgery, a lower-cost alternative to femtosecond laser that may be mounted directly under a surgical microscope. The system uses a continuous beam of red/orange light that induces a phase change in the capsular collagen as it cuts, which has been shown to significantly increase flexibility compared to a manual capsulotomy and reduce fibrosis. In a clinical cohort, the CAPSULaser created perfectly circular capsulotomies in all 50 eyes. European studies are ongoing to gather more data and assess long-term outcomes.
