Dr. David Chang demonstrates implantation of the Synchrony (Abbott Medical Optics), the first dual-optic accommodating IOL. The lens is composed of two optics separated by a spring-loaded set of haptics that tend to push the optic apart. He explains that the lens is designed to fill the capsular bag and changes its configuration with ciliary muscle contraction. The amount of accommodation is proportionate to the amount of movement of the anterior optic and its dioptric power. Good results have been reported with 2-year follow-up showing correlation of accommodation and movement on ultrasound biomicroscopy.
