Smartphone fundus imaging is a portable and cost-effective method to record retinal images, but there are 2 main challenges with existing methods: They require good hand stability on the part of the examiner and both hands of the examiner are engaged. To overcome these shortcomings, Dr. Deependra Singh and colleagues developed a solution where the smartphone can be mounted on a virtual reality (VR) headset and placed on the examiner's head. The team used an iPhone 13 and captured retinal images with a condensing 20D and 28D lens. Not only were they able to capture high-quality videos and images of the retina, but they were able to indent the periphery and capture that as well.
