Viscous Fluid Injection into Suprachoroidal Space

    Editors' Choice
    Retina/Vitreous

Drs. Lin and Guzman manage the inadvertent injection of a fluid-oil mixture into the vitreous following PPV for retinal detachment. After repairing a repeat tractional retinal detachment in this diabetic patient, the surgeon was mistakenly handed the previously removed fluid-oil mixture instead of fresh silicone oil. A high injection pressure consequently caused a large suprachoroidal accumulation of the emulsified fluid-oil mixture, and resulted in a vitreous and choroidal hemorrhage. After draining the vitreous hemorrhage, Dr. Lin places an incision to remove the fluid-oil mixture.
