Researchers analyzed 16 silicone lenses of various designs and materials that were explanted due to optic opacification resulting from surface deposits. The presence of asteroid hyalosis was confirmed in 86.4 percent of cases. A database search turned up no correlation between asteroid hyalosis and hydrophilic acrylic lenses explanted due to opacification, which appears to indicate that asteroid hyalosis may be a contraindication for silicone IOL implantation.
