This comparative trial randomized 55 patients to either everting sutures alone (n=36) or everting sutures plus lateral tarsal strip (n=27) for primary involutional lower eyelid entropion. At 18 months follow-up, six of the everting sutures procedures had failed, while none of the everting sutures plus lateral tarsal strip procedures had failed (P=0.02). Previous studies of lateral tarsal strip alone showed a recurrence rate of 14 to 22 percent, suggesting the combined procedure might also be more efficacious than lateral tarsal alone.
