Intracameral cefazolin reduces post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis risk by 88.7 percent

Researchers compared endophthalmitis incidence after phaco-IOL implantation at one hospital during the four years following the addition of a prophylactic 2.5 mg/0.1 mL intracameral bolus of cefazolin at the end of surgery with the previous two years before its use. Endophthalmitis rate was 0.047 percent after cefazolin introduction compared with a significantly higher rate of 0.422 percent in the pre-cefazolin group.
