This was an open-label, prospective, randomized multicenter study, conducted at seven German eye centers in an effort to understand the influence of IOL material and design on PCO. Subjects received a silicone sharp-optic edge CeeOn Edge 911A in one eye; in the other eye, either a hydrophobic acrylate sharp-optic edge AcrySof MA60BM or a silicone round-edge optic design PhacoFlex SI40NB. At three years, the rate of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was 2.1 percent for CeeOn compared with 2.1 percent for Acrysof, and 5.7 percent for CeeOn compared with 17 percent for S140. Researchers concluded that there is less PCO for sharp edge designs, independent of IOL material.
