This retrospective study finds that patients with re-opened full-thickness macular holes have a high chance of experiencing closure after a second vitrectomy. Final visual acuity in these patients is similar to that after successful primary vitrectomy. In contrast, a second attempt on patients with initially unsuccessful surgery resulted in a lower anatomic closure rate and relatively poor final vision even if their macular holes were closed successfully.
