Chapter 4: Clinical Evaluation and Imaging of the Anterior Segment
Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy
Lens
The clinician should examine the lens both before and after pupillary dilation, evaluating its size, shape, clarity, and stability. Examination of the lens may help the clinician to determine the etiology and guide the management of lens-related glaucomas. Assessment prior to dilation provides useful information about the effect of lens opacity, posterior capsule opacification, or lens subluxation on visual function. A posterior subcapsular cataract may be indicative of prior long-term corticosteroid use. An intraocular foreign body with siderosis and glaucoma may result in a characteristic yellow-brown or rust-color discoloration of the lens epithelium.
