CT and MR Angiography
The development of better hardware and software has enabled precise CT and MR imaging for diagnosis of arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, and arteriovenous fistulas without the expense, discomfort, and risks associated with intravascular catheterization use of contrast agents. MR angiography is useful for diagnosis of vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia seen in hemifacial spasm. However, MR angiography is less sensitive than direct catheter angiography for identifying carotid-cavernous fistulas. When determining which test to use, the ophthalmologist may consult with a radiologist to discuss the suspected lesion and to ensure selection of the imaging modality best suited to the patient.
