Chapter 3: Clinical Evaluation: History
Highlights
-
Appropriate management of glaucoma is based on accurate diagnosis, assessment of severity, and likelihood of progression, as established by means of clinical evaluation.
-
Clinical evaluation of a patient with, or suspected of having, glaucoma begins with a thorough ocular and medical history as well as a review of available pertinent records.
-
Relevant factors include the individual’s age, race or ethnicity, and family history of glaucoma.
-
The patient’s past and present ocular and systemic conditions and use of medications are important considerations in both the diagnosis and management of glaucoma.
-
Evaluation of a patient with glaucoma also includes assessment of the effects of the disease on the patient’s quality of life, with referral to a low vision specialist if warranted.
