Pterygium, a fibrovascular degeneration of the conjunctiva with a characteristic appearance, should be evaluated for neoplastic disease if there is atypical pigmentation, elevation, or vascularization.

The presence of band keratopathy can have systemic implications as well as an effect on the patient’s vision and comfort. Proper evaluation can therefore be particularly important for patients with band keratopathy, as it may help uncover associated systemic disease.

The 3 clinical variants of iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndrome can be easily remembered as follows: the first letter of each variant, when combined, also produces the acronym ICE—iris nevus syndrome, Chandler syndrome, and essential (progressive) iris atrophy.
