  • Dr. Fraunfelder is director/chief of the cornea/external disease/refractive surgery division at Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland. He is also professor of ophthalmology, cornea/external disease, ocular oncology, and refractive surgery at the institute.

    He completed his medical degree at OHSU and a medical residency at Providence Medical Center in Portland. He also served as a resident medical officer at Alice Springs Hospital in Alice Springs, Australia, and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Fraunfelder was a fellow in cornea/external disease and refractive surgery at Casey Eye Institute, followed by mini-fellowships at Alcon Pharmaceuticals in Fort Worth, Texas, the Food and Drug Administration in Baltimore and the World Health Organization in Uppsala, Sweden.

    He earned an MBA degree in healthcare management from Portland State University/OHSU.

    He is a reviewer for numerous medical publications; the author of books, book chapters and journal articles; and a frequent lecturer on topics including cryotherapy for surface eye disease and drug-related ocular side effects.
