  • Dr. Raymond S. Douglas is associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology. Additionally, he is chief of ophthalmology at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Medical Center.

    Dr. Douglas completed MD and PhD degrees at the University of Pennsylvania on an NIH medical scientist training scholarship. He performed his residency training at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania and completed an American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship in orbital and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Douglas has received honors and awards, including the Medical Scientist Training Program Award, Heed Foundation Fellowship, Herman Knapp Fellowship, Cooperman Fellowship and Cosmetic Surgery Foundation-Fellow Award.

    Dr. Douglas is particularly interested in orbital disease and facial aesthetic reconstruction and directs a laboratory investigating the causes of and potential treatments for Graves orbital disease. Dr. Douglas' current research on the immune pathogenesis of orbital inflammatory disease is funded by the NIH and the American Thyroid Association. In collaboration with Terry Jay Smith, MD, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Douglas' laboratory has identified a novel autoantibody that may promote Graves disease. Dr. Douglas also collaborates on several projects investigating functional eyelid and orbital disorders. He has written articles published in more than 25 scientific journals on topics, including cellular immunology, cancer research, thyroid eye disease, facial plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery, and has contributed to two textbooks.
