Carlevale IOL Extraction
Dr. Evangelos Manousakis presents a case of Carlevale IOL extraction a year after its initial placement due to optic surface opacification. The Carlevale hydrophilic IOL is specifically designed for scleral fixation without sutures and positioning in the ciliary sulcus, and has been used for the correction of aphakia without capsular support. The fixation is done by a system of haptics with scleral self-anchoring; two diametrically opposed T-shaped “anchors” rest on the sclera protected by a scleral flap or placed in a scleral pocket. After a complete pars plana vitrectomy was performed, a scleral tunnel was created in order to take out the scleral-fixated IOL and replace it with an anterior chamber IOL.
